Investigating the Possibility of Screening High-z GRBs based on BAT Prompt Emission Properties

چکیده
Abstract. Being able to quickly select among gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) seen by the Swift satellite those which are high-z candidates would give ground-based observers a better chance to determine a redshift for such distant GRBs. Information about these high-z GRBs is important in helping to resolve questions about the early universe such as the formation rate of high-z GRBs, the re-ionization period of the universe, the metallicity of the early universe, and the Hubble expansion. Initially using a sample of 51 GRBs with previously measured redshifts, we have developed high-z screening criteria employing the GRB spectral as well as temporal characteristics of the prompt emission from the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on Swift. Now that the sample has increased to 81 GRBs, we have revisited the screening criteria and our methodology. Our updated high-z screening criteria are presented in this paper.

Screening High-z GRBs with BAT Prompt Emission Properties
Detecting high-z GRBs is important for constraining the GRB formation rate, and tracing the history of re-ionization and metallicity of the universe. Based on the current sample of GRBs detected by Swift with known redshifts, we investigated the relationship between red-shift, and spectral and temporal characteristics, using the BAT event-by-event data. We found red-shift trends for the peak-fl...
متن کاملThe spectral-temporal properties of the prompt pulses and rapid decay phase of GRBs
The prompt emission from GRBs is the brightest electromagnetic emission known yet it’s origin is not understood. The flux density of individual prompt pulses of a GRB can be represented by an analytical expression derived assuming the emission is from a thin, ultra-relativistically expanding, uniform, spherical shell over a finite range of radii. We present the results of fitting this analytica...
متن کاملIndication of Two Classes in the Swift Short Gamma-Ray Bursts from the XRT X-Ray Afterglow Light Curves
We present the discovery of two distinct classes in the Swift short duration gamma-ray bursts (S-GRBs) from the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) X-ray afterglow light curve. We find that about 40% of the Swift S-GRBs have an X-ray afterglow light curves which only lasts less than 104 seconds after the burst trigger (hereafter short-lived S-GRBs). On the other hand, another 60% of S-GRBs have a long lastin...
متن کامل01 81 1 v 1 2 9 Ja n 20 07 Using Swift observations of prompt and afterglow emission to classify GRBs By Paul
We present an analysis of early BAT and XRT data for 107 gamma–ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Swift satellite. We use these data to examine the behaviour of the X-ray light curve and propose a classification scheme for GRBs based on this behaviour. As found for previous smaller samples, the earliest X-ray light curve can be well described by an exponential which relaxes into a power law, oft...
متن کاملLong Gamma-ray Burst Prompt Emission Properties as a Cosmological Tool
Recently, a tight correlation among three quantities that characterize the prompt emission of long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with known redshift z, was discovered (Firmani et al. 2006a). We use this correlation to construct the Hubble diagram (HD) with a sample of 19 GRBs in the broad range of z = 0.17 − 4.5, and carry out a full statistical analysis to constrain cosmological parameters (CPs). To...
